The fighting game won the round, but the documentary stole the show. Street Fighter topped the domestic box office for the weekend of Oct. 16–18, while A24's three-hour You Can See Everything turned a limited release into the weekend's biggest talking point.
Together, the weekend's films brought in more than $100 million at the domestic box office.
Street Fighter takes No. 1
Paramount, Legendary and Capcom's Street Fighter opened with $30,775,377 from 3,575 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to Box Office Mojo's actuals.
The film added $20.1 million from 65 international markets for an estimated global opening of about $51.1 million, per Boxoffice Pro.
Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, and it earned $4 million from Thursday previews. As for cost, Deadline puts the film's net budget at about $82 million, while Boxoffice Pro says it's reportedly under $100 million.
The doc nobody saw coming
At No. 2, You Can See Everything made $15,601,418 from just 855 theaters. The A24 documentary, co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes.
That's the second-best nonfiction opening on record, according to Deadline and Boxoffice Pro. Only Fahrenheit 9/11, which opened with $23.9 million in 2004, did better.
The film sold out more than 2,000 shows over the weekend. Deadline and Boxoffice Pro both report it carries a 4.8 rating on Letterboxd, which they describe as the highest ever recorded on the platform.
Boxoffice Pro summed it up: "Street Fighter may rule the weekend, but the movie with the biggest punch was unquestionably A24's 3-hour doc You Can See Everything from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim."
Even industry insiders aren't sure how high it can go. "Who knows where this will go," one box office source told Deadline.
For a movie with no franchise behind it and a running time of three hours, that kind of turnout stands out. Sold-out shows across a limited number of screens also suggest there's room to grow if more theaters pick it up.
The rest of the top five
According to Box Office Mojo:
- Street Fighter: $30.8 million
- You Can See Everything: $15.6 million
- Other Mommy: $8.2 million
- Whalefall: $7.8 million
- Sense and Sensibility: $7.2 million
Lower down the chart, Whalefall opened with about $7.8 million, a soft start.
Who showed up
Coverage of Street Fighter's opening also looked at who bought tickets. Deadline and Boxoffice Pro reported different audience breakdowns, so we're not printing a single figure here.
Why it matters
A familiar video game brand winning the weekend isn't a surprise. A three-hour documentary on fewer than 900 screens earning about half as much as the winner is.
It's a reminder that a story people want to talk about can pull a crowd as strongly as a big franchise. Watch how You Can See Everything holds up in the weeks ahead.
