Awards season just got a full lineup of Black excellence. On Oct. 20, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the honorees for its 9th annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, led by Debbie Allen, Chris Rock, Quinta Brunson and Jaafar Jackson.

The event takes place on Monday, Nov. 16, in Los Angeles, with Roy Wood Jr. as host. It premieres on the CCA's YouTube channel in December.

Debbie Allen gets the Icon Award

Allen receives the Icon Award, which the CCA ties to A Different World and its 2026 Netflix sequel. For generations of viewers, that show helped define HBCU culture on screen, and the honor puts its legacy back in the spotlight.

Why the celebration matters

Shawn Edwards, the event's executive producer and writer, framed the honors as a statement of purpose. "At a time when there has been a direct assault on Black culture and Black history, the Critics Choice Association stands firmly committed to recognizing the best in Black cinema and television," he said in the CCA release.

He added: "This isn't something that we have to do, it's something that we want to do."

Jaafar Jackson's big day, and a tougher road

Jaafar Jackson receives the Actor Award – Film for playing his uncle in Michael. The CCA and Variety both describe the movie as the first biopic to gross more than $1 billion worldwide, and Variety calls it Lionsgate's biggest release.

The same day brought a twist on the Golden Globes front. Variety confirmed that the Globes turned down Lionsgate's request to enter Michael as a comedy or musical, so it's slated to compete as a drama. That puts Jackson in the Best Actor – Drama race.

The Globes' rule, as quoted by Variety: "A musical can be a comedy or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue to further the plot."

Lionsgate can appeal before Oct. 31, though Variety reports, citing unnamed sources, that the studio likely won't. Lionsgate declined to comment. Variety also disclosed that its parent company, PMC, co-owns Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Globes.

Dates to watch
