Denzel Washington is heading back into crime-thriller territory, and he's bringing the director of the Mission: Impossible films with him. Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber's United Artists have greenlit an untitled thriller starring Washington and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter reported on Oct. 20.

The film already has a date. It's set to open in theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.

The story

Washington plays a former police detective serving a life sentence. After he's diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, he's granted compassionate release with six months to live.

He goes home to an estranged daughter and to a grandson he never knew he had.

The official logline, as published by Deadline, sets the tone: "He only wants to make amends and forget his dark past, but his dark past has not forgotten him."

It's a setup that mixes family drama with crime-movie tension, two lanes Washington fans know well. It also raises plenty of questions the studio hasn't answered yet, starting with what kind of "dark past" is waiting for him when he gets home.

Who's making it

The script comes from Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner.

The producing team includes McQuarrie, Heather McQuarrie, Stuber, Nick Nesbitt, Joseph Restaino, Reza Moheet, Norman Aladjem, Katia Washington and Tommy Harper.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project was at one point referred to as The Frame. For now, it's officially untitled.

That's a deep bench of producers, and Katia Washington's name on the list keeps part of the project in the family.

When and where

The Hollywood Reporter reports that cameras roll in November in New Jersey.

There's no trailer yet and no other cast announced. Deadline reports that the role of the daughter has not been cast, so that's the next big announcement to watch. Whoever lands the part will share the screen with Washington in the emotional center of the story.

Denzel's next moves

This thriller comes after another big Washington project hit a wall. His Hannibal epic for Netflix with director Antoine Fuqua has stalled, with Deadline reporting it was paused over budget issues and The Hollywood Reporter saying its high cost "squashed it."

Before the McQuarrie film arrives, fans will see Washington in Netflix's The Take, formerly titled Here Comes the Flood, alongside Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. It's slated for 2027.

Why it matters

Washington has spent decades playing men with heavy pasts and hard choices. Pairing him with a director known for tightly built suspense puts a fresh spin on a story about redemption, family and running out of time.

Filming starts in November, and the clock to Oct. 1, 2027, is ticking. Street Buzz will keep an eye on casting news as it comes.
